Dara turns first sod as minister at Swinford park
DARA Calleary performed his first official sod turning as minister at Swinford Amenity Park on Friday.
A new astroturf facility, in a projecting costing €230,000, is being developed at the amenity park, home venue for the Mayo ladies Gaelic team and local Swinford Killasser LGFA.
In his address, Minister Calleary said it was unique to see a facility focused on ladies Gaelic football and he wished all the very best of luck.
A recently added walkway has proved invaluable for the community, while the astroturf will open up new opportunities.
Constructed to full GAA/FAI synthetic surface specification, the 80m x 48m pitch will have a net divide that will allow it to be used for two five-a-side soccer cross pitches. The full surface will be used for Gaelic training and warm-ups.
The project will be funded through the Swinford Community Lotto and Leader North East.
