Investment in Castlebar development land game changer for attracting FDI

MAYO TD Alan Dillon has expressed his delight with the announcement that Mayo County Council has entered into an option agreement to purchase 140 acres for €1.10m at Cloonagh, Castlebar.

The development land has significant potential for commercial, industrial, residential and amenity development into the future.

Said Deputy Dillon: “The establishment of this additional landbank in Castlebar is very welcome as I have always stressed the importance of having a strategic business site providing world-class infrastructure including installing the latest technologies in utilities and services and an internal road network.

“We have seen the success of the Business and Technology Park in Castlebar with the recent openings of Meissner Filtration and the new Fort Wayne Metals facilities. These companies have made a significant contribution to the county and have called for a science and technology park to facilitate the potential establishment of major bio-pharma facility.”

He continued: “I have highlighted recently during parliamentary questions for the establishment of additional IDA development land in the county and met with current and previous ministers to ensure Mayo is not left behind when it comes to strategic development sites when attracting inward investment to the region.”

Mayo has all the ingredients to become a major player in attracting FDI and enterprise Ireland supported companies due to the availability of a highly skilled workforce, a stable industrial and business environment, access to key markets and suppliers through a sophisticated transport and logistics infrastructure, proximity to leading third-level education institutions (GMIT, NUIG, IT Sligo and Athlone IT), and the availability of the right support infrastructure: water, electricity, waste water treatment and digital communications.

Deputy Dillon said he would continue to work in collaboration with the IDA, local authorities and industry groups.

“This is the beginning of a process that will in the future see the creation of a major, high value, knowledge intensive investment locating in Mayo.”
