Mixed afternoon for Mayo soccer clubs

THERE were contrasting fortunes this weekend for clubs in the Mayo junior soccer scene.

Westport United cruised into the T.P. Brennan Connaught Cup semi-finals courtesy of a 6-0 victory over Ballinasloe Town in United Park. Phil Keegan bagged a hat trick, with the other goals coming from Darren Browne, Mikey O'Brien and James McGrath.

But it was an afternoon to forget for Super League champions Castlebar Celtic as they were beaten by that exact scoreline by Salthill Devon to be eliminated from the Connaught Cup.

The visitors were missing several regulars but the defeat will leave them wounded, and they will have to regroup quickly as they begin the league title defence next Sunday against Ballyglass in Michael Keaveney Park.

In the T.P. Brennan Connaught Shield, Kiltimagh Knock United were eliminated after suffering a 4-0 defeat away to Ballaghaderreen FC but Glenhest Rovers marched on to the last four after a narrow 1-0 win at home against Ballymote Celtic thanks to Cathal Chambers solitary strike.
