Aldi’s nationwide expansion continued today with the opening of a new flagship store in Belmullet, creating 16 new jobs – with 11 staff members having been recruited from the local area.

Located on the Tallagh Road, the new store will be Aldi’s fourth to open in Mayo. The supermarket chain now operates 143 stores across the country.

Aldi has invested over €33m in capital investment in Mayo since 1999, as well as over €37m spent on Mayo suppliers in the last 12 months and over €2.3m in employee wages in the past year.

Featuring Aldi’s award-winning Project Fresh layout and design, the new Belmullet store boasts a large shop floor spanning 1,140 square metres, 100 free car parking spaces, eight bike racks allowing for 16 bikes, wide aisles, and hi-spec fixtures and fittings.

The new store is part of Aldi’s €160m commitment to its Irish store network, which sees a €100m investment in constructing and opening 20 new stores, while Project Fresh sees Aldi invest a further €60m investment to revamp the layout and design of all stores nationwide.

The store will be powered by 100% green electricity. Aldi has invested heavily in improving its energy management systems and its entire store network is now powered by 100% wind generated energy. Aldi was the second retailer in Ireland to achieve ISO 50001 accreditation in recognition of its efforts to improve energy efficiencies.

Aldi’s existing three Mayo stores are deeply involved with their local communities. In the last 12 months, the stores have donated over 2,500 meals to local charities through FoodCloud, saving the charities over €3,000 for the same period, while three Mayo charities have benefited from Aldi’s Community Grants Programme in the past year, each receiving a €500 bursary.

Speaking at the store opening, Colin Cronin, store manager of Aldi Belmullet, said: “Our new Aldi store in Belmullet is fantastic news for people in the locality. The spacious design means it is easier for customers to pick up what they need, and our aim is to ensure every customer has an enjoyable shop. From all the staff here at the new store, we hope everyone has a chance to pop in and avail of our great savings and award-winning products.”

Aldi Ireland has worked with a number of Mayo suppliers, including Western Brand Group in Ballyhaunis and Carr & Sons Seafood Ltd. in Killala, which have both supplied Aldi for 14 years, and UltraPure Laboritories in Foxford which has supplied Aldi for the past 13 years. Other local suppliers in Mayo include O’Hara's of Foxford Ltd and CPAC Foods, both based in Foxford. Aldi Ireland will spend over €37m on Mayo suppliers this year.

Aldi will sell over €750m worth of Irish goods this year, sourced from Irish producers, manufacturers and suppliers across the country. In July, Aldi extended the reduced terms for all suppliers that transact up to €1m worth of business annually until December. Aldi is the first retailer to confirm that these reduced payment terms will continue to the end of 2020.
