Mayo hotel calls for action in stopping racket caused by boy racers

A LEADING Mayo hotel is seeking action to stop the racket caused by boy racers outside their premises at night.

The Ellison Hotel, Lannagh Road, Castlebar, has moved to highlight the issue following complaints by guests staying at the facility.

A review has also appeared on Trip Advisor from a family highlighting their frustration at being unable to sleep due to boy races gathering and revving up their engines nearby.

A spokesperson for the hotel said the problem is normally confined to weekends when they are at their busiest.

“It a matter that needs to be urgently addressed because, to be frank, it is bad for business.”

The hotel has spoken to An Garda Síochána, Castlebar Chamber of Commerce and local elected representatives about the situation.

Councillor Donna Sheridan said apart from the damage caused to the hotel's business, there are issues of public health and safety involved.

“I am calling for CCTV to be put in place at the location to identify those responsible for causing this noise on a regular basis.

"It simply has to stop. No business can be expected to tolerate what's happening outside their doors.”

President of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, Bernard Hughes, said every step should be taken to protect existing businesses - particularly at a time when trading conditions are challenging.

He said: “We are fully supportive of the Ellison Hotel in having this matter resolved.

"The location is not an appropriate environment for boy racing and perhaps a suitable site should be found to accommodate them.

"A solution must be found to this matter without delay.”
