Campaign to make helmets for cyclists mandatory is ongoing

THE wearing of helmets by cyclists should be mandatory.

The issue was raised by Councillor Ger Deere at council level when he called for it to be compulsory to wear helmets on greenways.

However, he was advised that this would require by-laws and the best option was to proceed by way of education and awareness.

Accepting the legalities involved, Councillor Deere suggested Mayo County Council write to the government that helmets should be mandatory on roads and greenways.

He had seen people having simple falls but escaping serious injury because they wore helmets.
