Fines to be introduced for breaches of domestic travel 5km rule

Fixed charge notices for breaches of Level-5 Covid rules are set to be put in place this week.

Proposals are due to be brought before Dail Eireann and An Seanad.

The new laws are expected to come into place for breaches of the domestic travel restrictions, which come into effect from midnight on Wednesday.

The maximum fine will be €500.

Those restrictions, approved by the Cabinet last night, are:

Stay at home.

Exercise within 5 km of home.

There will be a penalty for movement outside 5 km of home with the following exceptions:

1. Travel to and from work where work involves providing an essential service.

2. To attend medical appointments and collect medicines and other health products.

3. To travel to attend disability care services.

4. For food and shopping.

5. For vital family reasons such as providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people and in particular for those who live alone but excluding family visits.

6. For family purposes, that is food production or care of animals.

7. To attend a wedding or funeral.

8. To visit a grave.
