Man charged in court over fatal assault at Swinford dwelling

A man has been charged at Castlebar District Court today in relation to a fatal assault in Swinford on Monday night.

Matusz Batiuk, with an address at Carrabeg, Swinford, was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday.

Detective Garda Sinead Caheny gave evidence of arresting the accused at 11.52 p.m. on November 17 at Castlebar Garda Station.

He is charged with the murder of 24-year -old Michael McDonagh from Knock.

His reply to the charge was no comment.

Sergeant Colm Corcoran applied for a remand in custody to Friday, November 20, in Harristown.

Defence solicitor Ms. Cathy McDarby made no application for bail.

She requested the accused receive appropriate psychiatric treatment while in custody and that he be placed in protective custody for his safety.

An application for legal aid was granted by Judge Fiona Lydon.

Remanding the accused in custody, she recommended psychiatric attention.

Any protective measures would be left to the governor.

The judge also certified for a Polish interpreter.

Michael McDonagh, Knock, lost his life in the tragedy.
