Special education classroom approved for Derrywash NS

APPROVAL has been received from the Department of Education for a special education needs classroom for Derrywash National School.

The school had been calling for a special needs classroom for a number of years and the project has now been approved under the Additional Accommodation Scheme 2021.

Welcoming the announcement, Deputy Alan Dillon said: “I had been in contact with the school management last year as the school had made a big effort to start offering a special class at the school.

“I wish to commend the school principal, Aishling McDonnell, and their board of management for prioritising the issue.”

It's been a good start to the year for Mayo school as the announcement follows on from the additional accommodation announced for Mountpleasant NS last week.

Added Deputy Dillon: “I had only placed a Parliamentary Question to the Education Minister, Norma Foley, as recently as last week on Derrywash NS so it is excellent to see this piece of special needs infrastructure being approved.

“It is important to remain focused on the development of improved special needs infrastructure. Thankfully now, there will be an additional piece of dedicated infrastructure for special education provision between the Castlebar and Westport/Ballinrobe area.”
