Virus infection rate in a Mayo district is more than four times the national average

New figures released by the HSE tonight have revealed that 760 new Covid cases were recorded in the Belmullet Local Electoral Area (LEA) during the period from December 29 to January 11 last.

It leaves the district with an a 14-day infection rate of 6031.7 per 100,000 of its population of 12,600 - more than four times the national average of 1410.2.

The Claremorris LEA had 396 new cases during the period in question, giving it an infection rate of 1449.

There were 309 positive cases in the Castlebar local electoral area, the district's rate standing at 1030.3 for its population of 29,992.

The Ballina district registered 307 new cases to bringing its infection rate to 1226.6 per 100,000 of its population of 25,110.

Swinford electoral area had 208 new cases to give it an infection rate of 1203.3 for a population of 17,286.

The district with the lowest infection rate is Westport.

It registered 168 new cases during the two weeks in question, leaving it with a rate of 914.1 for a population of 18,378.
