Payments of €888,703 made to serving Mayo councillors in 2020

A total of €888,703 has been paid out to the 30 elected members of Mayo County Council during 2020.

The two elected members who served as cathaoirleach for six months each over the course of the year received the highest payments – Councillor Richard Finn (€42,614) and Councillor Brendan Mulroy (€42,326).

A payment of €30,000 per annum is paid to the holder of the office.

All serving councillors are entitled to an annual allowance and representational payment, depending on the distance they travel to and from meetings.

They also receive an allowance of €1,000 each for their municipal district work.

The annual allowance for last year was €199,947 while representation payments came to €521,406.

The chairs and vice chair of municipal districts got extra allowances as did the chairs of strategic policy committees. These payments totally €66,257.

The amount spent on 20 councillors attending conferences and training events in Ireland was €32,062, ten members opting out of such events last year.

Ten councillors claimed a mobile phone allowance, the total outlay coming to €1,367.

A sum of €3,886 was spent on expenses abroad in respect of three elected members.
