Discarding of face masks in Mayo hospital car parks condemned

Concerns have been raised over face masks being discarded in hospital car parks in Mayo.

A elected member of Mayo County Council, Ger Deere, has issued an appeal to all users of the parking facilities at Mayo University Hospital to stop throwing their masks on the ground before getting into their vehicles.

He said the situation is particularly bad in the two car parks at rear of the hospital across from old swimming pool in the town.

Stated Councillor Deere: "It's bad enough to have these masks littering the place at any time.

"But it is unacceptable that anybody would dump used PPE when we are dealing with this contagious pandemic.

"It is very irresponsible behaviour and must be brought to a halt.

"I would ask those responsible to think of the consequence of their actions.

"And expecting other people and voluntary groups like Tidy Towns volunteers to have to pick up such litter and putting their own health at risk is not acceptable," he added.
