Mayo street closed to traffic after falling object hits windscreen of passing car
A busy street in Castlebar town centre has been closed off this afternoon following an incident.
The windscreen of a car was damaged after it was struck by a heavy object.
Unconfirmed reports suggest debris may have fallen from the roof of a tall, derelict building on the east site of the street.
The impact, accompanied by a loud bang, came as a great shock to the driver of the vehicle but no serious injuries were sustained.
Outdoor staff of Mayo County Council were swift to arrive at the location and cordoned off the street to traffic.
The damaged car remained at the scene for some time.
Pedestrians were restricted to walking on one side of the street only.
Gardaí in the town have been made aware of the situation following a 999 call at around 1.20 p.m..
A garda spokesman told The Connaught Telegraph that 'a crumbling chimney' on a building on the opposite site of the street to O'Donnell's Pharmacy has been initially cited as the location from where the heavy debris fell.
Investigations are ongoing.
