Castlebar town centre street remains closed for now

Ellison Street in Castlebar remains closed today and is likely to remain so over the coming days.

It follows an incident at the location yesterday after when a heavy object fell off a tall building and struck the windscreen of a car.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

It is understood the object fell from the crumbling chimney of a property.

Detours via Cavendish Lane, Duke Street and Castle Street are in place while pedestrians are not permitted to walk on the east side of the street.

Mayo County Council is expected to make a statement on the matter in due course.

The issue has brought into focus the need to address derelict buildings on the street.
