Call for road improvements at dangerous south Mayo location

COUNCIL engineers have been asked to assess options to improve Kilkeeran Cross in Ballinrobe and include it in the upcoming road works programme.

The location has been the scene of numerous accidents, with a car written off there recently.

A notice of motion calling for the works was tabled by Councillor Damien Ryan at a Claremorris – Swinford Municipal District meeting.

Senior engineer Conrad Harley said the project is under consideration but they could not make a definite decision until funding allocations are announced.

Councillor Ryan noted how weather conditions are a contributing factor to accidents at Kilkeeran Cross as much as anything else.

His colleague Councillor Michael Burke agreed that even if something could be done with resurfacing at a different grade it might protect people.

Councillor Ryan has also requested crash barriers on the boundary walls. At some points of the year adjoining fields are flooded, he said, and it was a concern if a car were to go in and turn over.
