Community heartbroken over death of 19-year-old Mayo student

The death has occurred unexpectedly at St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin, of 19-year-old Nikita O'Malley, Lakeview, Rathbawn Road, Castlebar.

She was dearly beloved daughter of Noel and Kathleen and much loved sister of Jennifer and Vicki.

Nikita is also mourned by her grandparents Michael and Helen Coyne (Castlebar), aunts and uncles Eamon, Pauline, Phil, John F., Michael Joe and Vincent (O'Malley family) and Margaret and Michael (Coyne family), aunts-in-law, uncles-in-law, cousins, relatives and a wide circle of friends.

Nikita will be especially missed by her best furry friend Sam.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

She was a student at Sligo IT and a past pupil of Balla Secondary School, St. Joseph's Secondary School, Castlebar, and St. Peter's NS, Snugboro.

Nikita enjoyed her weekend job at Mayo Leisure Point.

Residents of Lakeview estate turned out in large numbers this evening to form a Guard of Honour when her remains arrived home from Dublin.

Many lovely tributes have been paid to the deceased online where people remembered her as a very special young lady, full of kindness and courtesy.

A tribute by the management and staff of Balla Secondary School stated: “We extend our sincere sympathy to the O’Malley family on the untimely passing of Nakita.

"A member of the Leaving Cert class of 2019, her beautiful smile, gentle nature and kindness will be fondly remembered by everyone in our school community. May her gentle soul rest in peace.”

A tribute paid by the staff and students of St. Joseph's Secondary School, Castlebar, said: “Our school community is saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Nikita, a past student of our school.

“We offer our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Jennifer and Vicki, dad Noel and mum Kathleen, grandparents and all Nikita's extended family and friends.

"You are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult and sad time. May Nikita's beautiful, gentle soul rest in peace.”

Requiem Mass for the repose of her soul takes place in Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with burial afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.
