Breaffy traffic calming must be completed before opening of N5

DEPUTY Alan Dillon has received confirmation from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) that it is their intention to ensure any recommended works on the N60 at Breaffy would be implemented in advance of the completion and opening of the N5 Westport to Turlough project.

The upgrade of the N5 will likely result in changes to traffic movements along the N60 in the vicinity of Breaffy.

Said Deputy Dillon: “I understand TII has requested Mayo County Council’s National Roads Office to review the N60 between Breaffy and the new grade separated junction at the N5, with a view to submitting a proposal for appropriate interventions that may be implemented as part of the N5 works or under a separate contract.

“Under this proposal, a range of interventions are being developed for further detailed assessment, including options for the layout of safety measures and appropriate speed limits.

“This assessment will inform a recommendation that will be set out in a feasibility report, which is expected to be issued to Transport Infrastructure Ireland shortly.”

He added: “It would be Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s intention to ensure that any recommended works on the N60 would be implemented in advance of the completion and opening of the N5 Westport to Turlough project.

“I understand a key report will be discussed by Mayo County Council in the near future. I hope agreement can be secured to ensure suitable safety measures and speed limits can be put in place as soon as possible and definitely prior to the opening of the new N5 project.”
