Fire at Mayo cemetery is brought under control

A fire which broke out at the Old Cemetery in Castlebar has been brought under control.

The local fire-fighting unit was called to the scene after a blaze was reported at the location.

When the unit arrived, firemen discovered that a tree had been set alight.

The fire was quickly extinguished but is understood that damage was caused by the flames and smoke to a gravestone within close proximity.

The incident, which has outraged the local community, has been reported to An Garda Siochána.
