Move to address issue with flashing lights at busy Mayo shopping location

The flashing lights at the junction of Hopkins Road and Market Square in Castlebar are covered with a shroud which only allows the flashing light to be visible to vehicles approaching perpendicular to the crossing, an elected representative has been informed.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne had called for the matter to be investigated after he received a number of complaints.

A spokesperson for Mayo County Council explained: "Due to the road layout in Market Square, the shroud covers the light from vehicles approaching the crossing from Duke Street.

"Shrouds are used in urban areas to prevent the lights flashing in the direction of residential properties.

"The properties surrounding the crossing are commercial on both floors.

"Therefore, Electric Skyline has been requested to remove the shroud from the flashing light nearest Duke Street which will improve driver awareness of the crossing.

"In addition, the council will construct a raised crossing with associated line marking at this location to further enhance visibility of the crossing point to drivers.

"The raised crossing is planned for 2021.

"However we are awaiting confirmation from the broadband companies that they have completed trenching works in the area before the raised crossing is constructed."
