Community concerns raised over proposed closure of west Mayo road for four months

Concerns have been raised over a proposal to close the main road through Islandeady (L1811), which links the rural community to the existing N5 Westport-Castlebar Road, for four months for work to proceed on the new €220 million motorway between Turlough and Westport.

Islandeady Community Council said the plan will have 'a serious and detrimental impact on our vibrant rural community'.

The council has been in contacted with councillors in the Westport and Castlebar area to ask them to help address and satisfactorily resolve this issue.

"The diversion plans being put in place will impact on all of us," the community council has outlined.

It is understood councillors are prepared to make representations to reduce the time during which the roadway is closed.

However, the final decision is an executive one and not the responsibility of the elected members.
