Site identified for new skate park

A SITE at Lough Lannagh has been identified as a location for a new skate park in Castlebar.

Councillor Ger Deere tabled a motion calling on Mayo County Council to find a site, saying most progressive towns have a skate park. And, he pointed out at a local municipal district meeting, that it will be a new sport at the 2024 Olympics.

The cathaoirleach, Councillor Blackie Gavin, said a masterplan is being drawn up for Lough Lannagh and a site has been identified there for a skate park.

Councillors agreed this was a suitable location.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Deere said this would be a great addition to the town as well as the benefits skating and skateparks have on young people, both mentally and physically.

“Many skateboarders and roller sports are being forced to skate in unsafe areas such as streets and car parks, where they are causing concern, and I have been contacted by these skaters looking for help,” he said.

“The council is blessed with so many good locations that, further to consultation with stakeholders, would be ideal. I look forward to working on this brilliant initiative.”
