Housing for older people earmarked for Westport convent site

A HOUSING scheme for older people is being proposed at the old convent site in Westport.

The site, local councillors were told at a housing meeting, has been assessed and evaluated, and a plan is coming together for a project to develop housing for senior citizens.

This is not just a housing project, head of housing Simon Shevlin told elected members. It's a dereliction project and also a regeneration and heritage project.

The department have been supportive of it to date and a submission will be made in the coming weeks.

New civic offices and community facilities are also part of the wider plan for the former convent building, which is on Altamount Street in the town.
