Number of Mayo Covid related deaths stands at 152

Figures released by the Department of Health has confirmed that Mayo has the second highest Covid-19 mortality rate in the country.

The analysis of the country’s 3,978 confirmed Covid-19 deaths showed five counties were the hardest hit.

Dublin, Kildare, Monaghan and Cavan joined Mayo as the counties that have lost more than one person per 1,000 of its population to the virus.

Mayo's rate is 116.47, second only to Cavan with 120.77.

The study, which related to the period from February 28, 2020, to February 19, 2021, revealed Mayo's mortality rate was 152 while the number of confirmed cases in the county was 5,777.

The statistics show that Dublin has recorded 1,476 deaths, the highest overall number and almost a third of the national total.

Cork had 355 deaths while Co. Kildare recorded 244. Limerick has 188 deaths.

The county with the lowest number of deaths was Leitrim, where 13 deaths were recorded.

However, Sligo had the lowest rate of Covid-19 deaths per 100,000 of population, with a figure of 25.9 recorded.
