Arrangements being made for repatriation of victim of Mayo hit-and-run collision to his native Latvia

Relatives and friends of a 45-year-old Latvian national who died from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run collision in Castlebar last Wednesday night are preparing for the repatriation of the remains to his home country.

Deniss Prosvirnevs, who resided at Spencer Street, Castlebar, was struck by a vehicle while walking at Humbert Way near the pedestrian crossing between Pavilion Road and the Curragh.

He later died from his injuries at Mayo University Hospital.

The deceased had been living in the town for a number of years.

His tragic death has evoked a deep sense of sorrow and loss in the community and deepest sympathy is tendered to the bereaved family on their huge loss.

A repatriation fund has been opened with an account, Candle of Grace, set up at the Allied Irish Bank, Main Street, Castlebar, while donations can also be made via PayPal to candleofgrace@gmail.com.

An Garda Siochana announced earlier that a man in his 30s was arrested in Castlebar in respect of the hit-and-run collision.

Investigations are ongoing.
