West Mayo community in mourning over teenager's tragic death

A west Mayo community is mourning the tragic death of a teenager following road accident on the main Castlebar to Newport road.

David McHale, Newfield, Mulranny, lost his life in the fatal single vehicle collision at Corha at approximately 11.50 p.m. last night.

Many message of sympathy have been extended to the bereaved family on the website of Midwest Radio where his death notice was published earlier today.

Aged 17, the deceased was a student of Rice College, Westport.

The funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Two other occupants in the car were injured in the accident.

One the passengers, also a teenager, has been receiving treatment at Mayo University Hospital for serious injuries.

The other passenger, aged in his 20s, has also been in care at the Castlebar facility.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the accident while a forensic collision team was at the scene for most of today.

Mayo County Council confirmed within the last hour that the road (R311) has reopened to traffic.

They have appealed for witnesses to come forward, particularly road users who have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 11.40 p.m. and 12 midnight last night to make this footage available.
