Charity walker cleaning up littered roadways and hedgerows of Mayo during challenge

Castlebar resident Helen Gleeson can't believe the level of dumping and littering taking place throughout the community.

She is currently undertaking a '50 Miles in March' walking challenge to raise funds for the Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland - an organisation that helps autistic children.

As part of her daily treks, she has to picked up over 50 bags of rubbish and that number is expected to double before the end of the month.

Bottles dumped on the roadside which Helen picked up and recycled.

She said: “The roadways and hedgerows are a disgrace. I just can't believe how bad our roadsides have become.”

She regularly posts videos and photographs to her Facebook page highlighting the scale of the problem.

Helen can't believe how bad the flytipping problem has become in Mayo.

Helen has received support from Sharon Cameron, environment officer of Mayo County Council, in her initiative.
