Mayo's N5 road works are on schedule

THE new N5 roadway project in Mayo is currently on target to be completed ahead of schedule.

A Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting heard yesterday (Monday) that the works are progressing very well and the contractor is probably two to three months ahead of the scheduled date for substantial completion.

The scheduled date of completion is October 2022 and councillors welcomed the fact that it is on target despite Covid.

Earth works are continuing this year and then it will be down to sub base and black top works and finishing structures.

The role of Michael Ring in securing the project when a minister was acknowledged at the meeting.

Having viewed drone footage of the works, Councillor Gerry Coyle wondered 'where will the Michael Ring monument be? Will one of the roundabouts be named after him?'

Described as 'the most significant' project in their lives, Councillor Peter Flynn said Michael Ring's contribution had been 'massive' and he made sure it was delivered along with Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
