Condition of road leading to Mayo cemetery condemned as 'disgraceful'

An elected member of Mayo County Council has described the condition of the road leading to Islandeady Cemetery as 'disgraceful and disrespectful'.

Councillor Ger Deere said the road is riddled with large potholes - "mainly due to the ongoing roadwork on the new N5 which cuts right trough the existing road."

Councillor Deere said he recently attended an extended family members' interment at the cemetery and was shocked.

He hit out: "It is so disrespectful to the deceased on their final journey and to family members visiting graves.

"I am calling on the the contractors on the new N5 and Mayo County Council to carry out repairs as a matter of urgency and to keep this road in good condition until works are completed on the new N5 route."
