Fears over a negative impact on Croagh Patrick have been expressed.

Decision imminent on proposed mast near Mayo's holy mountain

A DECISION is due this week on the erection of a proposed telecommunications mast in Murrisk.

Eircom are seeking permission to construct a 15-metre high free-standing communications structure with associated antennae and communications dishes at Carrowkeel, Murrisk.

A decision on their application is due from Mayo County Council tomorrow.

The company said the structure will provide vital communication services to the surrounding areas.

If given permission, it will be offered to all licenced network operators as a point of co-location, reducing the need for alternative structures in the area.

A number of objections have been lodged to the plans.

Its negative visual impact on Croagh Patrick, the national famine monument and Murrisk Abbey have been highlighted by objectors.

One submission says the location of the mast is essentially in the middle of the village, where it will be 'totally visible', and it is also the busiest area for tourists – within 100 to 200 metres of the abbey and Campbell's pub, where the majority of those visiting the village congregate.

Another submission observed: “Murrisk is one of the few unspoiled villages in Ireland and this prestige should not be broken by this proposed construction.

“People are attracted to the village of Murrisk because of its unsurpassed and stunning natural beauty.

“The proposed construction is not in keeping with the natural beauty, setting and unique landscape of the village.”
