North Connacht 110 kV project moving to planning later this year

IT is hoped to move EirGrid's North Connacht 100kV project into the planning process in the second half of this year, with construction then to follow.

The company recently confirmed selection of an underground cable option for the new electricity development that runs from Ballina to Ballaghaderreen.

It will follow the routes of the N5 to Swinford and N26 to the Moy station, as well some local and regional roads. The project also involves a 'complex' river crossing of the Moy.

In the coming months, EirGrid will be engaging with landowners along the route, the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council heard yesterday (Monday) in a presentation.

It will be a combination of road and private land options, with a route that minimises disruption to people.

The decision to underground the project was welcomed by councillors who praised the company for their engagement and communication with concerned communities.

On the Moy crossing, Councillor Seamus Weir said four or five options were being looked at between Mount Falcon and the Ballina footbridge, and those negotiations were ongoing.

The project was 'vital' to the area, he said, and he commended the company for its communications with people.
