Progress to be made on Westport-Louisburgh greenway

EXPECT to see progress on the new greenway heading out towards Louisburgh from Westport.

The slow progress on the project was again bemoaned by local councillors, with Christy Hyland saying the landowners are all asking about it, with funding having already been allocated.

There was, he added, a joke in the Louisburgh local notes in the local newspaper asking 'where is the greenway?'.

In over a year, they had not been given the route options.

The project, he said, would create thousands of jobs.

Councillor Brendan Mulroy agreed this piece of infrastructure was 'massive' for this area.

Speaking on the first day of the easing of lockdown restrictions, he noted the amount of people coming to the Westport area and the greenway out to Louisburgh needs to be done 'straight away'.

Director of services John Magee said it has not been physically possible to do any work on the ground since January.

This piece of work was deemed critical.

Mayo County Council, he said, has two new engineers and they have been assigned to the tourism department.

From this week, they would be making significant programme regarding the Westport-Louisburgh greenway.

A full update will come before the next municipal district meeting.
