Big turnout in Mayo for Darkness into Light despite inclement weather

Hundreds of people across Mayo participated in a special Darkness into Light at sunrise this morning.

The event, in aid of Pieta House and supported by Electric Ireland, invited people to walk 10k - and 'give the gift of hope' to others.

While upholding government social distancing guidelines, many communities across the county marked the event in their own way.

The turnout included Deputy Dara Calleary in Ballina and Deputy Alan Dillon in Castlebar.

Deputy Calleary said: "It was a bit stormy and a little wet in Ballina - but loads of people turned out.

"That was kind of the point, too. No matter how stormy it is for you, there's always support and help.

"And, most importantly, there is a community that cares."

Deputy Dillon said: "Well done to everybody who turned out on this cold morning, showing their support for vital services."

All funds raised will support lifesaving suicide prevention services.

The annual event has raised €6.5 million to date in Ireland.
