Former Mayo TD returns to law career

Former Mayo Fine Gael TD, senator and councillor Michelle Mulherin is returning to a career in law.

In a statement, she confirmed her decision to resume her work as a solicitor.

She explained: "It's a big change again for me but I am really looking forward to it and to rising to meet the challenges of this new chapter.

"It is my hope and aim to represent clients in a courageous, capable, conscientious and compassionate way by building on the previous 16 years I practised as a solicitor and combining it with my many years experience of public service working for the people of Mayo and the common good as a TD, senator and councillor.

"I will be working alongside my excellent solicitor colleagues, Carmel Duggan and Caroline Barry of Duggan & Barry Solicitors (Castlebar).

"Sincere thanks for all the support and encouragement on the many journeys I have been on."

The Ballina woman first entered public life when elected to Ballina Town Council in 1999.

Five years later she was successful in her bid for a seat on Mayo County Council.

She served as a Fine Gael TD from 2011 to 2016.

After losing her seat in the 2016 general election, she was nominated to the Senate by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

She was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2020 general election.
