Mayo clean-up volunteers 'putting their lives at risk'

A MAYO councillor is concerned that volunteers picking up roadside rubbish are putting their lives at risk.

Calling for primary legislation to tackle illegal dumping, Councillor Gerry Murray said people doing clean-ups particularly along national primary routes are taking their lives in their hands - to pick up after other people.

If someone takes a speed wobble someone could be killed.

The council, he told a local area meeting, would have an extensive road management system in place if they were doing works.

This will go on until someone is killed, picking up after someone who should know better, he warned.

More extensive legislation is needed to deal with this kind of activity.
