Additional bins to tackle south Mayo dog fouling issue

ADDITIONAL bins are to be installed along a popular walkway in south Mayo to tackle dog fouling.

Having highlighted the issue of dog fouling on the scenic Bowers Walk in Ballinrobe, Councillor Patsy O'Brien has received confirmation that funding has been allocated for extra bins along the six-kilometre route.

At a meeting of the local authority earlier this year, Councillor O'Brien said he was informed that Mayo County Council did not issue a single dog fouling fine in 2020 and just two during 2019 and 2018.

Commenting on his social media, he said: “The dog population in this county has exploded and there has never been more fouling. It’s unbelievable that they have not taken any action within the county whatsoever.

“The news that extra bins will be placed along the Bowers Walk will go some way to alleviating the problem but there is more to be done.

“Ballinrobe Tidy Towns committee have been doing great work to try and eradicate this problem and in this regard I would now urge dog owners to clean up after their dogs.”
