Trial pedestrianisation to be discussed at Castlebar workshop

A TRIAL pedestrianisation of Cavendish Lane in Castlebar has been suggested by a local councillor.

A possible new link from the top of the lane through to Castle Street was also mooted by Councillor Cyril Burke at a local municipal district meeting.

A workshop is to be held to examine what may be possible at this or other locations in the town on pedestrianisation.

In a debate on dereliction, Councillor Burke said there are some areas on Ellison Street, close to the traffic lights, that could be considered where a new route could be opened up opposite Cavendish Lane towards Castle Street.

They had previously discussed pedestrianising a few areas in the town, he continued, and they should consider an area like Cavendish Lane, even if just for a pilot scheme for a month or two. And maybe there were possible other locations around the town that should be considered as well.

Maybe August would be a good time to do it, he suggested, requesting a report.

Municipal district head Iarla Moran suggested it would be worth holding a workshop to look at what could be done on the streets.

Councillor Martin McLoughlin supported his colleague, saying they should consider Cavendish Lane and possibly the main street, but they could discuss that at the workshop.
