Mayo village hits the jackpot for second time in a week

The lovely Mayo village of Belcarra has hit the jackpot for the second time in a week.

Earlier this week a €1 million ticket was sold at local shop Cunningham's Costcutters - although mystery still surrounds who the winner is.

Now there is further cause for celebration after Brentford Football Club gained promotion to the top flight of the sport in England after defeating Swansea City 2-0 in the Championship promotion play-off at Wembley today in what is considered the richest fixture in the game.

Belcarra's link to the club is Alan Walsh, the operations manager at the new Premier League club.

Alan Walsh

He is a member of one of the village's best known and most popular families and played with the legendary Brose Walsh Band for a number of years.

A son of Tomas and Teresa Walsh, he was a student of Balla Secondary School before moving to London to study at the city's College of Music.

He subsequently worked with the London Olympics and Paralympics Games Organising Group before his appointment at Brentford FC in April 2013.

Alan faces a busy summer as the club plans for prestigious fixtures against sides of the calibre of Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Two first half goals by Ivan Toney, from the penalty spot, and Emiliano Marcondes ensured them of their historic win.

Brentford, who lost last year's play-off final to Fulham, previously played at the highest level of English football in the 1946/47 season.
