'Enough is enough', says disheartened Mayo litter clean-up volunteers

The level of consistent littering at a beautiful Mayo lakeside walk has brought clean-up volunteers to their knees.

Castlebar Tidy Towns posted a photograph, published with this article, to its Facebook page showing the amount of rubbish they picked up at Lough Lannagh yesterday despite all the appeal to people to bring their litter home in the event of the bins being full.

It was accompanied by the following statement: "This is more than disappointing, it’s discouraging, disheartening, distasteful, and frustrating.

"What is the problem? Why can people not just bring home their litter instead of destroying our lakeside walks at Lough Lannagh?

"Our great friends at Mayo Adventure Experience said last week: "It's easy to say "oh ...but there's no bins" or "there's not enough bins" or whatever excuses you want to use... if you can fit your take away in your car to get it to a carpark ....surely you can carry your mess home to a bin that's not so full....”

"We concur.

"We have been involved with Mayo County Council, Castlebar Municipal, Castlebar Town Council, and Castlebar Urban Council since the beginning of the Lough Lannagh project and it seems to be getting worse.

"One of our volunteers walks the lake daily and fills two bags daily.

"We are pleading with you now, please bring your rubbish home.

"The lake belongs to the people of Castlebar and it is not yours to litter.
