Pyrite and houses are falling apart in Mayo - so surely it's time to sort it out

by Auld Stock

A NUMBER of houses in different parts of Mayo are falling apart.

It’s all because a substance called pyrite was in the blocks used to build the houses.

Now the property owners find their homes are cracked and crumbling.

Deputy Rose Conway-Walsh and a number of councillors have demanded the state should compensate householders who find themselves in homes surrounded by crumbling walls.

This is a shocking state of affairs.

As to how it all happened, I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to that question.

Perhaps Rose Conway-Walsh and the councillors who are now asking that the affected householders be compensated can provide the answers.

Certainly the householders affected by this outrageous occurrence should be compensated.

But where the compensation comes from is an entirely different matter.

One way or another, the pyrite problem should be settled in the quickest possible time.

This unfortunate matter cannot be allowed to drag on.

It is totally unfair to the householders concerned, to say the least.

Let’s get some answers to the pyrite problem.

The sooner the better.
