The champagne corks are popping in Breaffy.
The local ladies senior rounders squad are the toast of the central Mayo parish after lifting the All-Ireland GAA Senior Ladies title for the first time today.
The talented team defeated defending champions Glynn Barntown (Wexford) in the decider at Abbotstown, Dublin, by 8-6 to deny their opponents a fifth title in a row.
The decisive period of the match occurred in the fifth quarter when Breaffy registered five runs to move ahead of their rivals.
The final whistle of the Covid-delayed 2020 final was greeted with joy by a Breaffy side that had lost three semi-finals in recent years.
The members of the history-making squad included Helena McArdle, Gráinne Fahey, Katie Kenny, Paula Lenehan, Áine Basquille, Michelle Hopkins, Majella Haverty, Olivia Tolster, Karen O’Neill, Helen Gallagher, Avril Coyne, Laura Williams and Gráinne Gavin.
A number of them have previously tasted national success with Castlebar.
Many merited words of congratulations have been paid to the squad members and their coaches on social media since news of their success was confirmed earlier today.
