Mayo man captures World Landscape Photographer of the Year award

A Ballinrobe man has captured the World Landscape Photographer of the Year award.

Felix Sproll's image of waves crashing into the coastline at Doolin in Co Clare, was chosen as the winning entry in a competition which attracted over 6,500 entries.

Announcing his win on his Facebook page, Felix said: "I got some unbelievable news this week that doesn't feel real after a few days."

His entry, "Atlantic Winter Storm meets Ireland" was taken on a Nikon D750 camera.

The adjudicators described it as having "power, depth and [that it] conveys tons of emotion."

The 29-year-old began shooting landscapes seven or eight years ago.

He told RTÉ News conditions were good when he travelled to Do to try to capture the shot last winter.

Mr. Sproll added he spent about an hour taking photographs of waves battering the coast and subsequently selected what he thought was the image that best showed the force of nature.
