Vehicular and pedestrian access to historic Mayo graveyard being enhanced

An elected member of Mayo County Council has welcomed works on widening the roadway around the Old Cemetery in Castlebar which dates back to 1796.

The pedestrian access to the graveyard from from Lough Lannagh Road is also being upgraded.

Councillor Ger Deere said: "I had been contacted by several people regarding this issue.

"Due to the fact the existing road was so narrow it was causing traffic issues - and also elderly people visiting relatives had to walk quite a distance.

"So these improvements will greatly assist the public in that regard.

"I had recently met on site with local engineer to address the issues there and I thank him for his swift action."
