Covid outbreak confirmed at Mayo University Hospital

A Covid-19 outbreak has been confirmed at Mayo University Hospital.

A statement issued the Saolta Hospitals Group revealed an outbreak control team has been convened at the Castlebar facilty.

It is working with Public Health and Occupational Health to manage the response to the virus outbreak.

Covid testing and contact tracing of both staff and patients has been carried out to ensure the protection of public health.

"A small number of relevant patients have also been contacted, as a precautionary measure, with advice on self-isolating and contacting their GP for a COVID-19 test," the statement explained.

The Saolta Group added it cannot comment on individual cases to protect the privacy and confidentiality of those affected.

Meanwhile, the HSE earlier confirmed that 122 new Covid cases were recorded in Mayo over the past week.

Nationally, a further 994 new cases were confirmed by the HSE today - the highest number since mid-February.
