Council ban overnight parking at Keem Bay as gardaí point to traffic congestion at four other Mayo seaside spots

Mayo County Council has issued a public notice prohibiting overnight parking at Keem Bay on Achill Island.

The bye-law applies to caravans, dormobiles, tents and other temporary dwellings.

On-the-spot fines will be imposed for breaches.

Council personnel will be monitoring the situation to ensure compliance.

Achill Island Coast Guard announced on its Facebook page yesterday that An Garda Siochana had closed the road to Keem in for health and safety reasons.

The notice stated: "Do not attempt to access Keem as traffic is heavy.

"Stay safe, park sensibly and wear sunscreen.

"If you see someone in difficultly in the water or by the shore dial 112/999 and ask for the Coast Guard."

In a post on Facebook page of An Garda Siochana Western Region, gardaí said it noted significant traffic congestion at various beaches and beauty spots on the Mayo coast.

The following areas, they said, should be avoided due to heavy traffic as car parks were at capacity:

Old Head Beach

Roonagh Pier

Silver Strand

Carramore.
