Urban regeneration proposal for Mayo towns and villages

A MAYO councillor has asked that the Living City initiative be rolled out in Mayo to encourage regeneration in urban areas in the county.

The motion submitted by Ballina-based Councillor Mark Duffy will be submitted to Minister for Finance Pascal Donohue for consideration.

At the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, he said the initial scheme had stimulated large scale redevelopment and rejuvenation by private developers of derelict sites.

Dereliction is an issue in Mayo and this could innovate private development, both residential and commercial, improving towns and villages across the county.

The motion was supported by his colleagues, with Councillor Damien Ryan saying the only way to tackle this was through an incentivised scheme.

Councillor Peter Flynn agreed that anything that will help make housing available anywhere in the county was to be welcomed.
