€18,946 investment in Mayo libraries to assist disadvantaged groups

A Mayo TD has welcomed the announcement that funding of €16,643.89 is being provided by the Department to libraries in Mayo.

This, along with the local authority contribution of €2,302.11, brings the total costs of the projects in Mayo libraries to €18,946.00

Deputy Michael Ring said the funding, under the Dormant Accounts Action Plan, is designed to assist libraries in reaching out to older people, the unemployed and other marginalised, socially excluded and disadvantaged groups.

The funding programme in Mayo the purchase of 500 touch-type Read and Spell licences for people with literacy needs schools in deprived areas as well as 21 flatscreen PC monitors to be located in branches across the county to facilitate those with visual difficulties, older persons and those with physical disabilities.

“Our libraries in Mayo have responded to the challenges presented by the pandemic and this funding will help them to reach out and engage further within our communities.

"Mayo libraries have always been welcoming and inclusive and I thank the library staff for their ongoing commitment in providing a fine public library service,” added Deputy Ring.
