Big guns respond in Mayo Super League

TYNAN'S TAKE (PART II): By Stuart Tynan

Following an opening weekend of many surprises in the Elverys Sports Super League, it was more a case of business as usual last week for Westport United and Castlebar Celtic.

Any frustration that was inside the Super League favourites following their draw against Glenhest Rovers was unleashed against Swinford, as the Covies ruthless dispatched of the east Mayo outfit.

At Celtic Park, an early contender for game of the season took place between Castlebar Celtic and Ballyglass. All eyes were on the home side after a comprehensive defeat to Clarmorris and Michael McNicholas' departure as manager. Another defeat really could have seen Celtic's confidence plummet further but there was a real sense of anticipation as star striker Jordan Loftus made his return to the Celtic side.

His impact off the bench was huge against a Ballyglass side that never gave in until the end, and he set up Jason Hunt's late winner for what could be a watershed moment for their title defence.

Meanwhile, Ballina Town got their first points on the board after Jamie Cawley hit a late equaliser against in-form Claremorris. While Ballina remain without a win from their opening two games, the manner in which they got their point was huge for their season going forward.

They relentlessly attacked the Claremorris goal in the second half but couldn't find a way past their 'keeper Peter Murphy.

Their equaliser, in the seventh minute of added time, can set their season right up.
