Overcrowding problems ongoing at Mayo University Hospital

The pressures caused by overcrowding at Mayo University Hospital are in evidence again today.

Twenty-three patients are being accommodated on trolleys at the facility, 14 in the emergency department and nine in wards.

Nationally, 369 admitted patients are waiting for beds, according to today’s INMO Trolley Watch.

Of those, 298 patients are waiting in the emergency department while 71 are in wards elsewhere in the hospital.

A shortage of nursing staff has been cited as one of the reasons for the overcrowding problems
