HSE issues plea following 'very concerning' rise in Mayo Covid cases
The Department of Public Health West is today urging people in Mayo to continue to follow public health advice this weekend due to concerns over a rapid increase in Covid-19 cases in Mayo in recent weeks.
The Department of Public Health West has seen significant increases in Covid-19 cases in Swinford, Claremorris, Westport, Castlebar and Ballina.
The latest figures, covering the 14 day incidence during 27/7/2021 to 10/08/2021, reported Mayo with an incidence rate of 672.8 cases per 100,000 of population.
This compares to a national incidence rate of 431.8/100,000 of population.
Professor Breda Smyth, Director of Public Health West, HSE, said: “The current situation in Mayo is very concerning, as case numbers continue to increase rapidly.
“We are appealing to everyone who will be supporting Mayo GAA this weekend to enjoy the game safely.
"We are urging everyone, even those who are fully vaccinated, to be extra vigilant, act responsibly, and adhere to public health guidelines.
"Wear a face mask in public indoor areas and in crowded outdoor spaces. Keep at least 2 meters away from people you do not live with (social distancing) and continue to wash your hands. Where possible socialise outdoors and avoid crowded places where you cannot keep 2 meters apart from other people.”
Professor Smyth added: “If you have symptoms or are concerned that you have been exposed to Covid-19, please isolate and seek a free PCR test.
"If you are not yet fully vaccinated and are a close contact of a person that has tested positive for Covid-19, you need to stay at home and book a free PCR test.”
