Funding confirmed for second phase of recreational park in north Mayo community

Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has welcomed Minister of State Jack Chambers to Carrateigue today where confirmation of €151,732 in funding towards the development of phase two of a recreation park/playground in Dún Chaocháin.

The Ballina-based representative stated: “I am delighted to be announcing this very significant funding for phase two of this excellent community project.

"Phase one involved the development of a playground for younger children and is widely acclaimed and used throughout the community."

Now Minister Chambers has responded favourably to representation made on behalf of the local committee with a funding package that will allow phase two to proceed.

Deputy Calleary continued: “Phase two of Páirc Spraoi Caochán will cater for the social and physical needs of not alone young children but also teenagers and families, summer students and visitors to the area.

"It will be a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) encompassing a green-field, all-weather pitch zoned to accommodate tennis, basketball and soccer, and also including a zipwire cable.

"This phase of the project involves a partnership between Comhar Dún Chaocháin Teo, Mayo County Council and Coiste Club Óige Cheathrú Thaidhg who have identified a need for this amenity in the community.

“I am extremely grateful to Minister Chambers and his Department for sanctioning this funding and I congratulate the local committee and local Councillor Sean Carey for their perseverance and dedication to the project – I was glad to be able to assist."
